The Research Lab

Building Digital Infrastructure — and Experimenting Inside It

Embedding research, experimentation, and innovation inside living platforms and organizations.

Much of my research cannot be done by observing a system from the outside. It requires building the system — designing real digital infrastructure, standing it up with live users and partner organizations, and then running explicit experiments inside it while it operates.

A lab that builds what it studies

The questions I care about — how platforms attract and govern the people who build on them, how competition and incentives shape innovation, how scientific collaborations form, how knowledge crosses disciplinary frontiers — are difficult to answer with observational data alone. The interesting variation usually does not occur naturally, and where it does, it is rarely clean.

So a large share of my work runs the other way around. In collaboration with industry partners, scientific organizations, and grant-making bodies — and, where needed, by assembling my own engineering and data-science teams — I design and deploy real digital infrastructure, prototype platforms, and scale their adoption in the field, then run explicit experiments that test, measure, and optimize these systems while they operate.

The aim is two-sided: to advance fundamental knowledge, and to improve the systems themselves. Partner organizations get working infrastructure and evidence about what makes it work. The research gets identification that observational data cannot supply.

Build, deploy, experiment, learn

01

Build

Engineering and data-science teams design and construct the platform or data infrastructure — the marketplace, the matching system, the contest, the digital twin.

02

Deploy

The system goes live with real participants and a partner organization that needs it to work, not a laboratory sample recruited for a study.

03

Experiment

Randomization is designed into the operating system itself — in how participants are matched, what they are shown, how they are incentivized, and who they compete against.

04

Learn

Results feed back two ways: into the theory, and into the next version of the running system.

Labs, platforms, and research programs

Built and run in-house

RPDIES

The Research Program on Digital Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Strategy — the umbrella under which most of this work and most of the research team has sat.

IoT Open Innovation Lab

A platform built and run in-house to study open innovation in connected-device development. Research Director, 2016–2022.

Wireless Internet of Things Research Center

Northeastern research center; part of the founding faculty team.

NUgig

An experiential-education venture and live labor-market platform, run with the Chancellor's office — and the setting for field experiments on AI-enabled job matching.

Digital Scientific Twins

Prototyping a platform for digital twins in scientific work.

Cyber-Physical Marketing Challenge

An in-house contest platform used to study how participants respond to competition and problem design.

Partner platforms and field sites

Harvard Medical School & Harvard Catalyst

A live medical research community, and the setting for field experiments on how scientific collaborations form and how researchers search across the knowledge frontier.

TopCoder

The competitive software-development platform behind much of the innovation-contest work — on incentives, problem uncertainty, and how coders at different skill levels respond to competition.

NASA Tournament Lab

Chief Economist, 2011–2015 — helping build the infrastructure for running open-innovation contests and experiments at scale.

Strategic Research Grants Office

A university scientific grants office running experiments on its own funding decisions — how proposals are evaluated, who is selected, and how a funder can optimize toward its own goals.

Where the systems and data have come from

Beyond the platforms and field sites above, the data behind this work spans Palm Computing, Handango, the Apple App Store, the Apple jailbreak community, Unknown Worlds Entertainment (a games studio), GE, and a university experiential-education platform and organization (Northeastern's engineering co-op).

Research Team & Alumni

None of this is solo work. Across London Business School, Harvard and the NBER, and Northeastern, more than sixty research assistants — trained in computer science, software engineering, data science, electrical and computer engineering, economics, and mathematics — have written the code, assembled the datasets, built the platforms, and run the experiments alongside me. Many are now at Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Figma, Datadog, and Qualcomm; several hold faculty positions of their own.
